Guest Speaker Laura Rhodes
A Blue Badge Tourist Guide and tour manager, Laura has worked for many large tour operators and leads educational tours and special interest tours to RHS flower shows at Chelsea and Hampton court, as well as garden tours to the south west of England. She is familiar with many of the country houses and gardens of the north, and has worked extensively in the region. Other recent work has been with pilgrimage groups following the story of Early Christianity, and walking tours along the sites of Hadrian’s Wall. Laura is the chair of the North East England Tourist Guides Association and has been involved in both training and examining guides for other regions. Away from work, Laura enjoys her own little garden, and travelling in the UK and Europe with the family.

Kyle of Lochalsh – Attadale Gardens. Armadale, Skye – Armadale Castle Gardens.
Attadale Gardens were skilfully restored by their owner Nick MacPherson as an artist’s garden after the 1980 storm, with an impressive sculpture collection scattered throughout the 20 acre site. Originally laid out by Lord Macdonald in the early 19th century, the woodland gardens at Armadale Castle allow you to wander amidst 40 acres of trees, shrubs and flowers in a peaceful oasis.

Ardchattan Priory Garden, originally planted by medieval monks, affords breathtaking views over Loch Etive to Mull and Ben Cruachan. After sailing Loch Linnhe, we travel to Glenfinnan where the 18m-high monument provides a poignant reminder of the clansmen who gave their lives to the Jacobite cause.

Our final visit is Cawdor Castle Gardens, forever immortalised in Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth.’ The castle boasts three very different gardens, each with their own unique history and appearance. Displaying a wealth of flora and fauna, the gardens at Cawdor Castle are ever changing with the seasons.
